The One Thing Nobody Explains First: Wireless Signal Is Not Wireless Power
This is where most conversions go wrong, so it’s worth thirty seconds.
Your existing speakers are almost certainly passive. They have no amplifier inside and no power supply. They rely entirely on an amplifier pushing an amplified signal down speaker wire. That’s why they have bare wire terminals or binding posts rather than a plug.
So when someone says “make my wired speakers wireless,” there are really two very different goals:
- Goal A — Remove the source cable. Your amplifier stays where it is, short speaker wires still run to the speakers, but music reaches the amplifier wirelessly from your phone or streaming service. This is easy and cheap.
- Goal B — Remove the speaker wire entirely. No cable running across the room to the speaker. This requires a power outlet at the speaker, because an amplifier has to live there.
There is no product that sends both audio and power through the air to a passive speaker. Any product claiming otherwise is either misdescribed or is actually an active speaker with its own plug.

What you cannot do is eliminate all cabling to a passive speaker. Every speaker needs either speaker wire from an amplifier, or a small amplifier beside it plugged into the wall.

Two things worth knowing before you buy a Sonos Amp: it expects speakers with a nominal impedance of 8 ohms, and every pair connected to one Amp must share the same impedance — you can’t run an 8-ohm pair alongside a 6-ohm pair. Check your speaker labels first.
For larger homes, Sonos also released the Amp Multi in January 2026 — eight channels across four zones at 125W per channel, using gallium nitride circuitry that idles under 5.5W. It’s sold through installers rather than retail, and it’s usually the cleanest answer when someone wants five or six rooms running from one rack.
Why it wins: WiFi carries far more bandwidth than Bluetooth, doesn’t drop when you walk out of range, doesn’t hijack your phone’s audio, and stays in sync across multiple rooms.
Watch out for: your WiFi needs to be solid. In dense apartment buildings, dropouts are almost always a network problem rather than a speaker problem — we cover that below.
Method 2 — Bluetooth Receiver or Bluetooth Amplifier (Cheapest)
Cheapest method, with one big limitation. A Bluetooth receiver or amplifier costs $40 to $120 and takes ten minutes to set up, but it adds 100 to 200 milliseconds of delay — fine for music, unusable for TV or film.
Two variations here:
If you already have an amplifier or receiver: add a Bluetooth receiver (Dayton Audio WBA31, Audioengine B-Fi, or similar). It plugs into a spare RCA or 3.5mm input. Pair your phone, done. Typically under $50.
If you don’t have an amplifier: buy a small Bluetooth amplifier (Fosi Audio BT20A, Nobsound, Douk Audio). Speaker wires go in the back, phone pairs over Bluetooth. Usually $60–$120.
Best for: a single room, casual listening, tight budgets, a garage or workshop.
The honest downsides:

- One source at a time. Someone taking a call interrupts the music.
- Compression. Bluetooth compresses audio. On decent speakers you will hear it.
Method 3 — Wireless Speaker Kits (Transmitter and Receiver)
The only method that removes speaker wire across a room. A transmitter sits at your amplifier and a powered receiver sits beside your speakers. The receiver needs a wall outlet, because the amplifier for those speakers now lives there.
This is the method most people mean when they want to eliminate speaker wire running across a room. A transmitter connects to your amplifier’s output or line-out. A receiver sits near the speakers, plugs into a wall outlet, and has its own built-in amplifier driving the speakers with a short cable.
Best for: rear surround speakers, a speaker on the opposite wall, outdoor or patio speakers, any run where pulling cable is impractical.

A note on power figures: 20 to 25 watts is genuinely modest. It’s fine for small rear surround speakers, which only handle effects, but it will disappoint on main speakers or anything large. If your speakers are rated above about 60 watts, go with the Amphony 1800 or a Dynasty unit rather than the budget kits.
Before you buy any kit, check two numbers on your speakers: impedance (usually 4, 6 or 8 ohms) and power handling in watts RMS. The kit must match the impedance and should sit within your speaker’s power range. Underpowering causes distortion at volume, which damages speakers more often than overpowering does.
Method 4 — Converting Surround Speakers to Wireless
Use a kit rated for home theater, never Bluetooth. Surround effects arriving 150 milliseconds late destroy the soundstage, so latency matters more here than anywhere else.

How to Do It — Step by Step
- Identify your speakers. Look for a model number on the back or on the in-ceiling frame. Note impedance (ohms) and power handling (watts RMS).
- Find your speaker wire. Trace it to where it terminates — an old receiver, a wall plate, or a closet. This tells you where your new amplifier will live.
- Check for a nearby power outlet if you’re eliminating speaker wire rather than just the source cable.

Five Mistakes That Ruin the Result
- Using Bluetooth for TV. The delay makes video unwatchable. Use WiFi or a low-latency kit.
- Ignoring impedance. Driving 4-ohm speakers with an amplifier rated only for 8 ohms causes overheating and shutdowns.
- Underpowering. A weak amplifier pushed to its limit clips, and clipping destroys tweeters. More power, used sensibly, is safer than too little.
- Reversed polarity. Easy to do, hard to notice, and it hollows out the sound completely.

Dense buildings mean congested WiFi. In a typical Manhattan apartment building your router is competing with dozens of neighbouring networks on the same channels. Inherited in-ceiling speakers are common. Many NYC apartments have perfectly good in-ceiling speakers left by a previous owner, with the wires terminating in a closet and nothing connected.
