Short answer: Yes, you can safely mount a TV on metal studs — but not with the lag bolts that came in the box. Metal studs are hollow, thin steel that screws cannot bite into. You need heavy-duty toggle anchors that clamp behind the steel instead. Done correctly, a metal stud wall holds a TV just as securely as wood.

The number almost every guide gets wrong: anchor packaging quotes ultimate strength — the load at which it fails. Toggler’s own documentation states you should use one quarter or less of that figure as a safe working load. So a 265 lb anchor is a 66 lb anchor in practice. Any article telling you “one anchor holds 265 lbs, so one is enough” is describing the moment it breaks.

Why Metal Studs Are Different (And Why Your Screws Won’t Hold)

A wood stud is a solid block. Drive a lag bolt in and the threads bite into several inches of timber. Metal studs are nothing like that.

Interior partition walls in condos, high-rises and most post-1990 buildings use 25-gauge steel studs — hollow C-shaped channels roughly the thickness of a soda can. There is nothing there for a screw to grip. Drive a lag bolt in and one of two things happens: the hole strips immediately, or it holds for a few weeks and then slowly works loose under the weight until the TV comes down.

The solution is a completely different mechanism. Instead of threading into the stud, a toggle anchor passes through it and clamps a steel channel against the back face. The load is carried by that clamp, not by threads.

The rule to remember: in wood you thread into the stud. In steel you clamp behind it. Any fastener that relies on threads gripping a metal stud will eventually fail.

How Do I Know If I Have Metal Studs?

Three quick checks, no tools needed for the first two:

  1. Magnet test. Run a fridge magnet along the wall. On wood studs it grabs at scattered points where the drywall screws are. On metal studs it pulls firmly along a continuous vertical line.
  2. Building age and type. Apartment towers, condos, offices and anything built after about 1990 are almost always steel framed. In Manhattan high-rises it’s close to universal.
  3. Drill test. Drill a small pilot hole where the mount will cover it. Wood gives soft shavings. Steel gives a distinct metallic bite and fine silver filings.

Can You Mount a TV on Metal Studs? A Direct Answer

Yes — and the industry has UL-rated hardware built specifically for it. Commercial AV installers mount displays on steel studs every day in offices, hotels and conference rooms. The wall is not the problem. The hardware is.

The Four Ways to Mount on Metal Studs

1. Heavy-duty toggle anchors (best for most TVs)

Right choice for the majority of installs. A SnapToggle-style anchor drills through drywall and the stud face, then a steel channel snaps open and clamps against the back of the steel. Drilled into a 25-gauge stud, independent testing puts pull-out values in the 400+ lb range per anchor and shear values around 250–290 lbs — but remember the quarter rule above.

What to buy: TOGGLER SNAPTOGGLE (1/4-20 for TV mounts), Hillman Snap Toggle, or a purpose-built steel stud kit from Echogear or Chief that bundles anchors, drill bit and hardware. Expect $15–$40.

Best for: fixed and tilting mounts up to about 100 lbs.

2. Metal stud wall plate

The step up for heavy or articulating installs. A thick steel plate bolts across two or three studs, spreading the load, and your mount attaches to the plate. Peerless and Chief both make versions — a triple-stud plate in 12-gauge steel carries around 200 lbs.

Best for: large displays, commercial installs, and anywhere the mount will move.

3. Plywood backer board

The trade solution when you want maximum security on the surface. A piece of 3/4″ plywood is toggle-bolted across several studs, then painted to match or hidden behind the TV. The mount screws into solid timber, and the load spreads across the whole panel.

Best for: heavy TVs, full-motion arms, or anyone who wants to stop worrying about it entirely.

4. In-wall blocking

The permanent answer, if the wall is open. During a renovation, timber or steel blocking is fixed between studs before the drywall goes on. Nothing beats it for strength, and it leaves no visible hardware.

Best for: new construction and renovations. Worth requesting even if you’re not mounting yet — it costs almost nothing at that stage.

⚠️ The mistake that actually drops TVs

Do not hang a full-motion (articulating) mount on toggle anchors alone. Anchor manufacturers and mount makers both say this, and it’s the failure we’re called out to most often.

When the arm extends, leverage multiplies the pulling force enormously — a 60 lb TV at full extension can exert several hundred pounds of pull-out force at the top anchors. If you want a swing arm on a metal stud wall, use a wall plate or plywood backing.

How to Do It — Step by Step

  1. Find the studs and mark the centre. Metal studs sit 16″ or 24″ on centre. Use a magnetic stud finder and mark the vertical centre line — you want to hit the middle of the stud face, not the edge.
  2. Weigh your setup. TV weight plus mount weight. Check the label on the back of the TV rather than guessing.
  3. Choose your anchor count from the table above. When in doubt, add two more.
  4. Drill with a metal bit. A standard wood bit will skate off the steel. Use a titanium or cobalt bit sized to your anchor — typically 1/2″ for a 1/4-20 SnapToggle.
  5. Keep clearance. Leave at least 3/4″ of steel around each hole. Holes too close to the stud edge tear out under load.
  6. Install the anchors, snap off the plastic straps flush, then fit the bracket.
  7. Stop tightening when it pulls firm. Over-torquing deforms the toggle channel and spins the anchor in thin steel. This is the single easiest way to ruin an otherwise good install.
  8. Load test before hanging the TV. Hang off the bracket with your body weight. If it moves at all, stop and reassess.

Five Mistakes We Get Called Out to Fix

  • Using the lag bolts in the box. They’re for wood. In steel they strip on the first real load.
  • Plastic drywall anchors. Fine for a picture frame. Never for a TV, on any wall type.
  • Reading ultimate strength as working strength. Divide by four. Always.
  • Full-motion arms on anchors alone. The leverage will find the weak point eventually.
  • Drilling too close to the stud edge. The steel tears rather than holds.

If You’re in a NYC Apartment or Condo, Read This

We mount displays across Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens, and metal studs are the norm rather than the exception here.

Nearly every high-rise built since the 1990s uses steel framing. If you live above the tenth floor in a modern building, assume metal studs until proven otherwise.

Prewar buildings are the opposite problem. Plaster and lath over wood, often with metal mesh behind it. Different challenge, different hardware — and stud finders struggle badly with it.

Check your lease or house rules. Many rentals and some co-ops restrict wall penetrations, and a few require the wall to be restored at move-out. Worth a two-minute read before you drill a 1/2″ hole.

Beware of what’s inside the wall. Steel-framed buildings run conduit, data and sometimes plumbing through the stud webs. Metal studs have pre-punched holes exactly for this. Drilling blind into a stud web can hit live electrical cable.

When It’s Worth Calling a Professional

A 55″ TV on four toggle anchors is a genuinely reasonable weekend job. Get help when:

  • The TV is over 75 lbs, or you want a full-motion arm
  • You want cables concealed inside the wall (which means opening it)
  • You’re unsure what’s behind the drywall — electrical, data or plumbing
  • The wall is plaster, tile, brick or concrete rather than drywall
  • Your building requires a licensed, insured contractor with a certificate of insurance
  • The TV is part of a wider home theater or Control4 setup
